Florence

Florence is one of the most beautiful and important cities of Tuscany; in the Middle Ages it played a central role for culture, trade and economy. From 1569 to 1859 was the capital of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany with the families of the Medici and Lorena; later it became the capital of Italy from 1865 to 1871, after the National Unity (1861).

It is considered the birthplace of the Renaissance and the cradle of art and architecture; it retains some of the most beautiful monuments and museums of the world such as the Duomo, Santa Croce, the Uffizi Gallery, Ponte Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria and Palazzo Pitti.

Today Florence is a major university center and its artistic and architectural treasures are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
